About us.

We operate a small Parrot Rescue in the East Valley of Greater Phoenix, Arizona.  We call it “Arizona Parrot Rescue”. 

Our bird experience together started in about 1991.  My husband and I obtained our first bird together, a male Ducorp Cockatoo.  He had been neglected for some time and had half reverted to the wild, but he was gorgeous.  Chuck and I were determined to fully tame the bird and make him a loving member of our family.  It didn’t take long, perhaps six months.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have the documentation required in order to remove him from Hawaii and when we returned to the mainland, we had to leave Ozzie behind.  That was a sad day.

Later, we obtained another bird, and another and rescued some.  After I retired, we became an official rescue, advertising our services.  We used our own resources – it made it easier and more of a hobby than a job.  However, we take our “job” seriously and we care for each and every bird as though they were our own.  Well, some are.  Every rehomed bird is a loss to our family.  I often wonder why I put myself through the heartache but, the joy of rescuing a bird in need and watching it recover and thrive is very rewarding.  Sometimes, a bird was already looked after well and just needed a new home.  Either way, we have loved every bird that has come our way.

By this time, my research skills were well-honed.  They were actually well-honed well before this, as I am a trained certified paralegal.  Research has always been a passion of mine – I have a few.  I have researched the history and needs of every breed of bird that has been surrendered to us, and birds in general, from the ideal food, water, cage size, toys, play time, nail, beak and wing clipping, sunlight requirements, heathy and unhealthy perches, healthy homes without various chemicals, etc.  In fact, I cannot think of anything bird-related that I haven’t researched.One of the benefits of operating a bird rescue is that I have had the benefit of learning about the different species of birds, not only by researching it but, first-hand.  Although they are all delightful, some birds are more suited to particular owners than others.  If you are going obtain a pet bird, it would be wise to research the species and make sure you want to and can provide the care it needs.  My recommendation to anyone who has recently obtained a pet bird is to never force yourself on it and never be so stubborn and overpowering that you insist that a bird be a certain way.  That kind of a relationship will never work.  A bird is who he is or who she is.  If you don’t like it, do yourself and the bird a favor and rehome it.  Birds are trainable but, the bird’s personality is for life.
